Achieving Mental Excellence
Running is not 90% mental, but the mental side has significant control of our physical side. The more we can get our mental side to get our physical side to do, the better our performance will be. To be a great athlete you must have a solid mental foundation on which to build. It is as important in your mental preparation as it is in your physical preparation.
Develop your foundational beliefs for mental excellence:
1. Strive whole-heartedly toward excellence to reach your full potential.
2. Realize that nothing of any real value is ever achieved without hard work. Hard work brings satisfaction.
3. Develop a healthy attitude toward competition. Improvement, enjoyment, and integrity are more important than winning at all costs.
4. Sharing your efforts and successes in cooperation with others, makes the experience deeper and more meaningful.
5. Choose self-confidence by thorough preparation and thinking positively about yourself and your races.
6. Have fun! Success without having fun is not satisfying.
Develop this foundation and you will be successful!
Mental Excellence Principles:
DREAM BIG DREAMS!
One of your biggest limitations is the way you look at yourself. See yourself able to accomplish things beyond your present times (PRs). Huge improvements start with the belief that any goal is possible.
Measure yourself against yourself.
You know how your effort and performance went in practice and races. Expect the very best from yourself every time you workout and every time you race.
Always look at “The Big Picture”.
Direct your actions on what is good for the entire season. When the training is boring or it’s easy to quit early, continue to challenge yourself through the complete workout. If you let your daily situation or negative attitude affect your training, YOU WILL NEVER accomplish great things. Make a decision to be your very best – then don’t question that commitment. Do the training whether you feel like it or not.
Keeping your eyes on the big picture guarantees two things.
#1. You will drastically improve!
#2. You will know that every step was worth it!!!
Pursue Greatness rather than Glory.
Glory: is fleeting and seeks after praise for self, is only available to the winner regardless of effort, and often has a negative impact.
Greatness: seeks after the quality of the effort and experience, involves integrity and honesty, can be achieved by anyone, has lasting impact on people, and shows the distinguished character of the person.
Be a leader.
Everyone has an impact on the team, you lead the team to new heights.
There are many ways to lead; Encouragement, Cheering, Support, Warm-up, Stretching, etc.
Make sure the impact you have on your teammates lifts them up.
